Starting With a Bang

One week ago I decided to start a project, knowing that with my track record this may very well fizzle into a great big heap of nothing. If I follow through with my project as intended, I'll end up with approximately 730 photos of my daughters, documenting them through a period when it feels like they change every time blink.

I have to admit, this project is selfish on multiple levels. In addition to the photos, I can keep my grandmother who lives out of town well-stocked with pictures, and the one who's always saying that I don't write down the cute things they do happy. Err, because right now I'm doing a bad job at both.

So here we go!

Oh, my sweet baby H. Right now, you're 9 months, 11 days old. You're so sweet and man do you love to cuddle! I think that's all you'd do if you could. Well, let me amend that. Cuddle and eat. And poop.

And yes, that is snot coming out of your nose. Between you, your sister, your father and me this cold keeps circulating and kicking our butts. I know that in a few years you're really going to love that I preserved this mucus-y moment for you.

V. Today you are just shy of 32 months old, not quite 3. Your will is amazing, as is your tenacity and capacity for mischief making. Right now you're hiding from the camera and loving it. Also, you're not wearing pants. (Woohoo! One post in and I've already embarassed the both of you!) This pants embargo has been an on-going struggle and I will be so happy when it's over.

Puffpuffs. The food of the gods, as far as you and V are concerned, nevermind the fact that puffpuffs are really just for you. Apparently, one day Nana walked down the hall for one minute and came back to find the two of you surrounded by puffpuffs, cramming them into your mouths as quickly as possible. She said that she couldn't get mad because you were sharing. Given that sharing is an issue that the two of you need to work on, I have to give her that one.

Hiding from the camera again. I can understand that. But let's face it, kid - you're a-freaking-dorable.

There's not really a lot going on in this one, I'll admit it. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and get it out now and say that not all of these are going to be beautifully laid out and photographed.

But that face. I love this one because of those chubby little cheeks and the rumpled hair and knowing that really, you're just waiting for me to look away so you can get to the books and yarn in the bookcase behind you.

Your first bike! And oh my god that helmet! You think it's the best thing ever. I mean, you like both (the past weekend has been a chorus of "My bike! My helmet! My bike!"), but you would not take off that helmet. Your hair would be all sweaty, and for a brief moment I thought that you wouldn't let us take it off when we left to go shopping. I took the easy way out. I hid it in the closet.

Nakie baby! Enough said.

See what I was saying about that helmet?

Waiting for a table at Chuy's, to have dinner with Mimi. Can I say how much I love that you let me put bows in your hair? It fact, it's more likely to come out because of your sister, and not you. V just seems to have some kind of vendetta against hair adornments, as she's never really let me do anything with her hair. I've only just recently been able to put pig tails in her hair, and even then, that doesn't always last.

Please let me continue to put stuff in your hair.

Look at those eyes! The color changes constantly, ranging from bright blue with greeny-gold centers, to sea green, to blue gray. It depends on what you're wearing, how you're feeling, what the sky is like outside - it's amazing to see.

I don't remember what was on the table, but it was either 1, your sister's dinner; 2, something I had put up there to get it away from you; or 3, your new favorite, the remote controls.

At the moment, one of your favorite shows is Avatar, The Last Airbender. I find it funny that you love it so much, given that so many of the themes of tolerance, forgiveness, right and wrong, and family are so far over your head that you're not even close to aware of them. But you LOVE it. We watch at least one episode every night, and you call it "FIRE!" because in this show, people can manipulate the elements, and the firebenders seem (to you at least) to have the best way of fighting.

I like this photo because we see both you and Aang, the show's protagonist and namesake, in profile together.

Full disclosure: Here it was, a mere two days into my self-imposed photo experiment, and I forgot to take a picture of H before she went to bed. In my defense, I only had a brief windo in which to get a shot; she goes to bed early and I have to feed her, V and myself when we get home. So after H went down, I snuck in and got this shot of one little foot sticking out of the blankets. It's telling, though, as H sleeps like this most nights, as does her daddy.

What you've got against the camera I'll never know. I have a feeling that you're going to make this super hard on me, V.

At the doctor's for a check-up. We have photos of V doing pretty much the same thing (tearing up the paper on the table) at the same age. Although, she was quite a bit more uh, enthusiastic about it, to put it nicely.

What can't be seen is that the hair sticking up off the back of your head is sticking out at least six inches. I can't believe that my little bald baby is so big, and now has so much hair.

So that's a week. I'll try to be vigilant about posting, if anything because it takes too long to post everything at once!
